My name is Maksims Agafonovs, I am a second year student of Latvian Maritime Academy of Riga Technical University (RTU), obtaining a professional bachelor's degree in the speciality ‘Maritime transport - ship navigation’.  In the summer of 2023 I had the opportunity to work at Meyer Turku Shipyard in Finland, where I gained some experience in shipbuilding processes. This opportunity not only allowed me to gain valuable experience and knowledge in the construction industry, but also reinforced my decision to pursue a career as a seafarer. Prior to this experience I was hesitant, but the time spent in Finland convinced me of my passion for the maritime industry. It was also during this period that I realised that I was not homesick, which I believe is a significant advantage for a seafarer. In addition, from the age of seven I was actively involved in sports, which instilled in me a strong sense of discipline, determination and the ability to stick to a daily routine. These qualities are essential for keeping to a strict schedule and overcoming the demanding conditions that characterise life at sea. During my studies, I have learnt skills such as problem solving, effective communication and teamwork. I aim to further strengthen these abilities by gaining practical experience aboard your vessels, learning from seasoned professionals and contributing to your operations. I will be honoured to bring my commitment, adaptability and enthusiasm to your team as a Deck Cadet.
